I can’t believe that April has come and is almost gone. Time just seems to move really quickly during the spring. This is also a really busy time of year for many people. End of the semester, graduations, weddings, birthdays, spring cleaning, and just everyday life. I think it’s very important to enjoy all the spring festivities, but it is even more important to take care of yourself. Something that I always tell my family and friends is, “You have to take care of yourself, because no one else will.” I know we all like to be there for others in one capacity or another, but it is so, so imperative to also be there for yourself. So, as spring continues to blossom, I want to share with you all some of the practices that help keep me sane during this time of year!
One of my favorite pastimes is to read. In Texas we are currently basking in the few weeks where it’s tolerable, actually pleasant to be outside before the daily 100 degree temperatures arrive. I am definitely taking advantage of that by reading outside as often as time allows. By the pool, on my balcony, at a coffee shop patio. It really doesn’t matter. But being outside getting some Vitamin D and reading a good book is a few hours well spent. I have a tendency to revisit some of my favorite books every few years. There’s nothing wrong with the tried and true. Just like a good movie, the more you watch it the more subtleties you pick up on. The same goes for books. Especially those deep, ohmygoodness, this.just.changed.my.life. books. And I’ve found reading books at various stages in my life allows me to have a greater appreciation for the weight those books carry. Currently, I’m re-reading The Awakening by Kate Chopin. I first read this book when I was sixteen years old, and I was floored. Since then I have read and taught this book countless times over. And I still get chills. Ladies, this is a must read.
I know this is some people’s least favorite word, but exercise is so important for your physical and mental health. And it doesn’t have to be reps upon reps at the gym. Although, that works too. There are so many options when it comes to fitness that I’m sure something out there fits your lifestyle. Yoga. Pilates. Dancing. Kickboxing. Running. Zumba. Weight Training…
When I don’t necessarily want to leave my house, I don’t let that stop me from getting a good, quick workout in at home. I’ve linked what I use when I want to get my workout on, but leaving my house just isn’t happening.
Mental health is essential. This looks different for everyone, but it’s important to take time out of your day to clear your head. Quiet, meaningful time in solitude, allows your thoughts to pause and your energy to recharge. It’s important that you don’t have any diversions, and relaxation is your focus. If you have a quiet place in your home, that you can carve out just for you, then that’s perfect. Some people use their closets. Others have a vanity they use because they like to look at themselves while seeking mental clarity. For me, the biggest component is making sure I’ve eliminated all distractions. I turn off Google Home and my TV. Sometimes I even put my phone on “airplane mode” to truly minimize any potential disturbances. 10 minutes a day, for yourself, can truly make a noticeable difference in your life. I promise!
Our bodies need to stay hydrated. Especially when other parts of your life may be chaotic or if your schedule is slightly off, hydration is essential. Drinking water is second nature to me. I drink water all throughout the day at work and while I’m running errands on the weekend. Often, my girlfriends will comment on my skin and ask what I use to keep it so clear. I don’t use anything. I drink water. Lots of water. That’s really my answer. I gave up sodas about 12 years ago, and I haven’t looked back. And on days when I haven’t had enough water I can feel it. Your body can’t talk, per say, but it definitely has a way of letting you know what it needs. Next time you’re thirsty, opt for a glass or bottle of water instead of something else. Water enhancers may help you, if you need a little flavor in your water. But be sure to do your research and decide which brand is best for you.
Once a week, step away from the screens that run our lives and go have real, human interaction. There is nothing like spending quality face to face time with friends. Sometimes I feel guilty for “having fun,” but it’s necessary for my sanity! Everything in life shouldn’t be so serious, and it’s important to make time to laugh and have fun with people who are important to you. This doesn’t have to be anything elaborate. Sometimes I’ll spend a Sunday afternoon meal prepping with a girlfriend. We both have to do the tedious chore, so why not do it together while enjoying each other’s company? Regardless of what you’re doing, be sure to carve out time for those special people in your life!
Spring can be so fun, but also pretty busy. So please, take time to take care of yourself!
